Could Hypnosis Be Better For Your Health

Hypnosis, in general, is a psychological situation wherein an individual shows signs of changes in the behavior, thought, or attitude. On the other hand, some people may undergo an increase in suggestibility and subjective feelings of an “altered state of consciousness.” Although the word "hypnosis" comes from the Greek word "sleep" the hypnotized individual is not asleep. Nor are they unconscious.

Hypnosis is, in fact, a natural state of heightened awareness, focused attention and, often, deep relaxation. This experience is called “the alpha state”. In the “alpha state” our brain wave frequency is slower than when awake, but faster than when we're asleep. According to different academic studies, the old misconceptions are now eradicated and the fact that all forms of hypnosis are really self-hypnosis is now paving the way to deeper understanding.

Hypnosis training is best started by learning about the past and present of hypnosis itself. The history of hypnosis reaches centuries back; it wasn’t until the 1880’s that hypnosis advanced from the ‘Dark Ages’ and into a more scientific realm.

It was then that a Scottish neurosurgeon James Braid came up with the term hypnotism. James Braid is not only responsible for bringing up the term hypnotism but also responsible for the study that proved that hypnotism was not a product of magnetic fluids flowing through our bodies.

Braid spent time studying Animal Magnetism and Mesmerism and concluded from those studies that hypnosis could be induced by anyone as long as they followed a certain set of simple rules. As Braid experimented and studied hypnosis he coined the term hypnosis for reasons that the subjects undergoing it looked to be sleepy. After further study he found that one could be hypnotized and still be wide awake, at this time he attempted to change the term hypnotism to mono-idealism; mono- meaning one, and idealism for the focus on a particular idea.

This term made better sense as the act of hypnosis is created by complete focus on one idea to the extent that it eventually becomes a reality for the subject. The term mono-idealism did not take and hence today hypnosis is still known as hypnosis.

Hypnosis does not have the exact process compared to meditation and relaxation. In the process of meditation or relaxation, the goal is to have a more relaxed and meditative state. This process can affect the body and mind in a better way.

What makes hypnosis different is that getting into the meditative state of mind and later on the hypnotic process will use the state of mind to transmit and deliver the messages throughout your body.

Compared to meditation, state of mind is the main goal of hypnosis and becomes actively responsive to words, thoughts, and ideas.

The hypnosis applications varied widely. Some of the people include the use of hypnosis for entertainment and health functions.
